The Vihorlat Observatory in Humenné is a regional specialized scientific – research, cultural – educational and professional – observatory institution in the field of astronomy and related sciences. The basic mission of the observatory is on the grounds of observations to collect, scientifically and professionally assess, professionally process and present to the public newest knowledge in the field of astronomy and related sciences, in the region of Upper Zemplín, especially within the territorial region of districts Humenné, Snina, Medzilaborce and Vranov. The headquarters of the organization are located in Humenne city. Most of the observing, outreach and educational activities are performed at the Astronomical Observatory on Kolonica saddle, near the Kolonica village. This is the place with good condition for astronomical observations especially because the low level of the light pollution. Vihorlat Observatory was one of the founders of Dark Sky Park Poloniny in 2010. Has a lot of experience in promoting correct ways of lighting. The information about the light pollution problem is a part of every visit on the Astronomical observatory on Kolonica saddle. The day-time excursion include the short lecture in the small information pavilion about the light pollution problem and the Poloniny Dark sky park. The building of more serious information center is the infrastructure component of the present project. The night time excursion also includes the information about the importance of dark sky preservation.
